Choppy – the award-winning wooden balance bike designed in Latvia with love for your little ones.
Sizing & Suitability
What is the best age for a Choppy balance bike?
The best age is between 18 months and 2 years. As soon as your toddler can walk confidently, they can start using a push bike like Choppy. You don't need to "teach" them – they will naturally start by walking the bike, then running, and finally gliding as their confidence grows. Read more in our in-depth guide The Best Age for a Balance Bike.
When should we switch to a pedal bike?
Most Choppy riders are ready for pedals around age 3.5 to 4.5. Because they have already mastered balance on their Choppy, they usually skip training wheels entirely and learn to pedal in just one afternoon. Read more in our post Balance Bikes vs. Training Wheels.
How do I know if it will fit my child? (Don't guess!)
The most accurate way is to measure your child's inseam (inside leg length), not just their height. Choppy fits children with an inseam between 30cm and 44cm. Not sure how to measure? See the "Book Method" in our Balance Bike Sizing Guide.
Choppy is designed for toddlers aged 2 to 4 years old (approx. height 85cm–110cm). Starting at age 2, the seat drops to 30cm so they can walk flat-footed. Growing by age 3-4, the seat raises to 44cm for gliding.
Is 2.4kg really that different from a metal bike?
Yes. It is a massive difference. Standard steel bikes often weigh 4kg or more. Because Choppy weighs just 2.4kg, it represents a much smaller percentage of your child's body weight. This allows them to lift, turn, and maneuver the bike independently, which boosts confidence and speeds up learning.
Materials & Maintenance
What materials is Choppy made from?
The Choppy is made from birch plywood veneer produced in Latvia, various polymers, and almost no metal. The frame, handlebar, and seat are wood. Wheels and grips are rubber. Only the wheel axles use metal.
Is a wooden balance bike durable enough?
Absolutely. We use marine-grade Latvian birch plywood, the same material used in high-end furniture and boat building. It is incredibly strong and treated with a moisture-resistant coating. Unlike metal, wood doesn't rust, and the frame offers natural suspension to absorb bumps.
Can I leave the bike outside in the rain?
While Choppy is treated to be water-resistant, it is a natural product. We recommend storing it indoors or in a dry shed/garage to keep it in perfect condition for years. Think of it like a quality piece of furniture, treat it well, and it will last for generations.
Does it have brakes?
No, and that is intentional. For toddlers (ages 2-3), hand brakes are often confusing and hard to reach. The safest way for them to stop is the "Flintstone method" by putting their feet flat on the ground. This instinctive action is why balance bikes are safer than training wheels.
Assembly & Shipping
Is it really tool-free assembly?
Yes! You can leave the toolbox in the garage. Choppy snaps together using a patented interlocking system. It is like building a 3D puzzle which is secure, simple, and satisfying. Most parents have it ready to ride in under 5 minutes.
Where do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer Free Shipping to all EU countries. Orders are shipped directly from our warehouse in Riga, Latvia. Delivery typically takes 3–5 business days.
What if I need spare parts?
We build Choppy to last, but accidents happen. Because we manufacture everything in Europe, we stock all spare parts (wheels, seats, pins). Just contact us, and we will get you back on the road.
Does Choppy come with a warranty?
Yes! Every Choppy comes with a 2-year warranty covering manufacturing defects. We're confident in our quality.
What's special about the packaging?
We hate waste. That’s why our box isn't trash, it’s a toy. The packaging can be used for further playing! The box can be assembled without the use of glue, is made of FSC-certified cardboard, and the inner box is designed as an adventure track board game with drawings. It doubles as a garage for the bike, adding extra play value.
What is your return policy?
We offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If you're not completely happy, return the bike in its original condition for a full refund.
